A response to summer reading.

I read 1984 and The Power and the Glory. I did like both of them. The Power and the Glory was about a society where religion is illegal and the protagonist is a fugitive. It was a well-written book and it carried a poignant purpose. I would give this novel a 7. I love 1984. It is one of my favorite books and makes one of the scariest points of any book I've read. It's so scary because it's so realistic and believable. It was ironic because the fall play this year is 1984 and I'm hoping we can make it as striking as the novel. I would probably give 1984 an 8 or 9.

I, too, think 1984 is a magnificent novel. I'm so glad you've read it because you will really enjoy comparing it to another dystopian novel that we read second semester: Brave New World. I also think you will enjoy reading 1984 a second time--the novel is so rich in layers that you will notice nuances you may have missed the first time around. Also, read the article on Doublethink in the Longman Reader.

The Power and the Glory sounds pretty good. Should I read it? 1984 was good when I read it in eigth grade so I might consider reading it again too.

Yeah, Emily, you would definitely like The Power and the Glory. To give more detail, it's about the last Catholic priest left in Mexico. And it definitely was more uplifting to read than 1984. It's ending actually left me thinking that there may be some hope for humanity.
